Permaculture Design

The Schubert Home

The Schuberts are an active family of three, with two older dogs, living in a suburban neighborhood in north Seattle. They care deeply about living sustainability and reducing their ecological footprint, so they have installed solar panels on their roof, setup rain barrels to store extra water, and planted a few fruit bushes and annual vegetables in pots. They wanted to take their garden to the next level with a professional permaculture design.

This design achieved the following:

  • Streamlined pathways through a central entertaining area, with a fire pit and ring of seating and plenty of space to walk around

  • Removed impermeable paving and flagstones from over half of the backyard

  • Increased water catchment capacity from 100 gal. to 1,100 gal.

  • Reused materials like flagstone, urbanite, pots and potted plants

  • Utilized space above hot tub with a pergola wrapped in edible and flowering vines

  • Established a new fruit tree guild of peach, daylily, golden currant, wild ginger and saffron crocus

  • Established a perennial herb garden and ample space for annual vegetables

  • Developed a vermiculture composting system with easy access from kitchen

  • Established native plantings with evergreens, insectary plants, and edibles
