Concept Drawings

The Lincoln Home

For this home in suburban Kirkland, the owners asked for three very different designs.

Cottage Garden Concept

This design integrates front and back yard with informal drifts of plants and winding paths, producing a unified feeling of abundance. Native flowering shrubs and trees find themselves among fruit-bearing apple, fig, raspberry and elderberry, with show-stopping focal points like satomi dogwood and golden chain tree.

Xeriscape Garden Concept

The guiding principle of this design is the frugal use of water. The plant palette includes species that fare particularly well with little to no extra watering but still add striking style and color to the landscape, including royal grevillea, Italian cypress, strawberry tree and yucca.

Formal Garden Concept

This concept relies on rigid symmetry, focal points and repetition to achieve an effect of beautiful formality. The grassy back lawn and planting space reserved for annuals bring this design down to earth, making it inviting and livable. Extensive use of evergreens like Japanese holly and Port Orford cedar contrasts nicely with Himalayan birch and Hollywood juniper.
