Seattle Green Factor

The Redwood Apartments

This newly built apartment building in southeast Seattle sought a striking visual design that also met Seattle Green Factor requirements, an effort by the city of Seattle to increase the amount of and improve the quality of landscaping in new development. The challenge with this particular plot was that a large portion of the land was already taken up by the structure itself.

This design achieved Green Factor requirements by doing the following:

  • Intensive green roof over most of the structure

  • Permeable paving in driveway and front entry pathway

  • A stunning entryway framed by evergreen strawberry tree and lavender

  • A bioretention cell for stormwater infiltration along the street, with curb cuts

  • Drought-tolerant and native species plantings

  • Over 150 plants and expansive mulch beneath them
