Construction design
ADA Accessible Raised Beds

For this home on the Eastside, the homeowner sought to replace an old deck and expand it. This project required comprehensive construction details for the permitting process.

The new deck design features an upper portion that matches the height and footprint of the old deck, while the lower portion is completely new, helping to bring the overall height of the living space into scale with the ground level. The design adds a canopy structure over the upper deck for four-season living space under a luminous frosted polycarbonate roof.

Views were carefully oriented to maintain sight lines through the surrounding garden, not only for better enjoyment of the landscape but also so the parents can keep an eye on their kids. Railings feature child-safe spacing and ease of maintenance.

In the heavily wooded landscape that surrounds this deck, the planting palette and layout restores the native ecology of the understory. Native plants like ocean spray, redtwig dogwood, evergreen huckleberry, and sword ferns provide ecosystem services for the forest as well as a tranquil atmosphere for the homeowners.
